A payment provider can look attractive in a feature list yet be a poor fit for a particular merchant account or store workflow. Before choosing a Shopify payment gateway in India, confirm what the current integration supports and what the provider has approved for your business.
This guide is a practical shortlist and evaluation framework, not a universal ranking or a claim that one provider will produce the best conversion rate for every store. Payment methods, onboarding, charges and supported features need to be checked for the account you will operate.
Compare current Shopify integrations
| Provider | Official Shopify route | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Razorpay | All-in-one Razorpay Payment Gateway integration | Account approval, required methods and the current app |
| Cashfree | Cashfree Shopify payment plugin | Plugin choice, payment methods and merchant terms |
| PayU | PayU Shopify integration | Approved account, current integration and required payment flows |
Use the providers’ own instructions for Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU. A payment gateway’s general product range should not be assumed to be identical to the features of its Shopify integration.
Start with the payment methods your customers need
List the methods that matter to your audience and business model, such as UPI, cards or netbanking, then verify them in the chosen integration. Consider the customer’s mobile journey and how they return to the store after attempting payment.
Razorpay and Cashfree document Indian payment methods for their Shopify integrations. The availability of a particular method or feature can still depend on the merchant setup. Confirm it directly instead of relying on a competitor’s checkout screenshot.
Compare the full cost of taking an order
Ask the provider for the applicable processing charges and any other merchant fees relevant to your account. Separately check Shopify’s third-party transaction charges for the selected plan. Read the current Shopify third-party provider guidance and your store’s billing details.
A lower headline percentage is not a complete cost comparison. Review the transaction mix, settlement process, refund handling and the effort your team spends reconciling payments. Confirm applicable taxes and contract terms with the provider before committing.
Review settlements, refunds and reconciliation
Ask how the provider reports a successful payment, how funds are settled and how a refund is initiated through the supported workflow. Identify who in the business will reconcile orders and provider records.
Use a small operating checklist: the order reference, payment status, refund reference where applicable and settlement report. This is particularly useful when a customer reports a failed attempt but believes money has left their account. Follow the provider’s documented support process for that situation.
Test more than a successful payment
- Confirm the supported test process and account permissions.
- Test the key payment methods relevant to the approved setup.
- Check success, cancellation and failure behaviour.
- Verify the resulting order and payment information in the permitted test workflow.
- Review the refund process and merchant reporting with the account owner.
- Complete the provider’s current go-live checklist.
Use test modes or the provider’s approved testing process rather than treating a live customer as the first integration check. Record what you tested and who approved launch.
Keep the integration and checkout scope clear
A payment gateway, an accelerated checkout product and a cash-on-delivery tool are related but different decisions. Confirm what you are installing, which checkout it affects and how it interacts with your theme and other apps.
Use supported installation routes. If your existing payment setup is working, plan changes and rollback around an agreed release window. Avoid replacing a live integration merely because another provider’s marketing page lists more features.
Get implementation help around your store
Share the store URL, provider account status, required payment methods and the issue you want to solve. If this is a migration, include the old platform and the payment workflow that needs to be preserved.

Frequently asked questions
Which gateway is best for every Shopify store in India?
There is no single answer for every business. Compare the approved account, current Shopify integration, required methods, charges and operational fit.
Are payment gateway fees the same as Shopify transaction fees?
No. Treat provider charges and any applicable Shopify third-party transaction charges as separate categories when estimating order costs.
Can I use features from a gateway’s custom website API on Shopify?
Do not assume so. Check the features supported by its current Shopify integration and the relevant Shopify capabilities.
Can Wireframe Studios help test a Shopify payment setup?
Yes. Share your store URL, provider status and intended methods so installation and testing can be scoped around your setup.
